Jackson County County Wide Drainage District
In 1970 with the election of the first directors of Jackson County County Wide Drainage District began obtaining easements on existing drainage and future projects. From 1970 to current year JCCWDD has obtained easements and maintains approximately 600 miles of drainage ditches and creeks throughout Jackson County. The district has 22 elevation control structures on its right of ways. These structures are used to control elevation and erosion in areas where the natural fall of the land is too extreme and prone to erosion. The structures vary in size as needed for application ranging from 32” in diameter up to 66” in diameter with lengths up to 100’ long. Four large RC&D projects are maintained and the responsibility of the district. These RC&D projects where originally constructed in cooperation with the Soil Conservation Service, U.S. Army Corp of Engineers and JCCWDD. They consist of large erosion structures with rock outfalls on the Lavaca River, Navidad River and Arenosa Creek. In the last five years the Zacek #1 Structure, Gasch-Kutach Structure and the Kallus #2 structure have been completely replaced. Many of these existing structures were built in the 1980’s and are being replaced as needed.
Vegetation management along ditches and right of way is an ongoing job as is the constant build up of silt and obstructions. In 2022 JCCWDD employees along with contractors applied herbicide to 58 miles of drainage ditch and right of way to control unwanted brush and broadleaf weeds. A great effort is put forth to preserve all grass and desirable trees along right of ways to help protect against erosion. JCCWDD employees shredded 322 miles of ditch and right of way through out the county where spraying is not acceptable or when conditions were unfavorable. There were 27 miles of drainage ditches cleaned and shaped using heavy equipment to return ditches to their original depth and return the banks to a maintainable slope. There were 14 high water crossings replaced along with 21 inlet pipes and drop structures. In total 407 miles of drainage ditch and right of way were worked on in 2022. The number of miles maintained per year fluctuates depending on the weather conditions, the size of the drainage ditches and the type of maintenance required.
There are nine elected directors on the JCCWDD board. Two directors are elected to each precinct to represent Jackson County. The ninth director is at large and represents the whole county. JCCWDD currently employees nine full time employees. The JCCWDD board meets the first Tuesday of every month at 7:00 P.M.
